"PEONÍN" IS THE OFFICIAL MASCOT OF THE 36TH CHESS OLYMPIAD IN CALVIÀ 2004
Like all sport events, the 36th Chess Olympiad in Calvià needed a mascot. The City council of Calvià, conscious of the extraordinary educative impact that the formation and practice of chess can have on young people, decided that it should be the young people who design the mascot. Thus, a drawing contest was installed, directed to students of local schools and professional formation of the Balearic Islands. The winner received a 300€-check gift from "El Corte Inglés", and its design will be used as mascot for the olympiad.
The contest was a success: piles of drawings were received and soon they were exposed in the City council of Calvià from the 16th of December to the 23rd of December of 2003. The jury finally decided to award the proposal of Miquel Muntaner Marcè, who not only gave form to the mascot, but baptized it with its likeable name: "Peonín".
The Mayor of Calviˆ delivered the prize on the 27th of December 2003 during the inauguration of "Neula Parc", in the Galatzó Pavilion of Calvià.
The winner, Miquel Muntaner Marcè, receiving the award from Carlos Delgado, mayor of Calvià.
The original drawing was later adapted for use as the official mascot on all the promotional elements of the 36th Chess Olympiad.
